Children's lead exposure project in St. John's returning results
Participants in the LeadNL project began receiving their blood and environmental
lead results February 14, 2011.
The study, a partnership between Memorial University of Newfoundland, Eastern Health, and Health Canada, is assessing the environmental lead exposure of children living in St. John's.
Additional funding obtained over the summer of 2010 allowed the researchers to increase the number of child participants from 170 to 250. Because of the increase in sample size, the planned release date for sharing results with families was delayed by one month.
“We have been very pleased with the support our research has received from St. John’s residents and we look forward to sharing their results with them,” says Dr. David Allison, one of the principal investigators with the project.
The confidential reports to the participants will be followed by a second report in March 2011 summarizing city-wide results. The research team plans to release its final project report in the spring of 2011.
